What fences do San Francisco neighborhoods need?
The city fits a lot of variety into about seven by seven miles. A few patterns shape most of the fences we quote:
- Small, shared back yards. Many lots are about 25 feet wide, so a back yard often touches three or more neighbors. Good-neighbor wood fences are the default.
- Front-yard limits. In many residential districts, a fence in the front setback can be 3 feet if solid or 6 feet if at least 75% open.
- Hills. Bernal Heights, Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights and Potrero Hill lots often need stepped fences, deeper posts and sometimes retaining walls.
- Fog and salt. In the Sunset and Richmond, materials and hardware have to cope with damp, salty air most of the summer.
Each city south of San Francisco has its own planning and building department, so the rules change at the county line. Start with the San Francisco permit guide and the front yard height guide.
