Where does chain link make sense in the city?
- Side passages between houses, where privacy matters less than keeping people out.
- Dog runs and garden areas at the back of deep lots.
- Vacant lots, parking areas and construction sites.
- Rear lines next to alleys, rail rights-of-way or open space.
Galvanized or vinyl-coated?
Galvanized mesh is the cheapest and fine inland. Close to Ocean Beach or the Bay, black or green vinyl-coated mesh with coated posts lasts longer and looks less industrial. Privacy slats can be woven in, though slats catch wind, so posts and footings need to be sized for it.
How much is chain link per foot?
As of October 2026, Angi's national guide lists chain link at about $8 to $40 per linear foot installed. The low end is a 4-foot galvanized fence on flat ground. Taller fences, coating, slats, top rails and gates move it up. Because the material is light, steep or stair-only lots affect chain link less than they affect wood or vinyl.
Can chain link be used in a front yard?
Only within the city's front-setback limits. In many residential districts, Planning allows a front-setback fence up to 6 feet only if it is at least 75% open, and chain link is often used to meet that. See front yard fence height in San Francisco.
