Fence repair

Fence repair in San Francisco

Many city fences fail at a few posts long before the boards are done. We fix the parts that failed and tell you plainly if replacement makes more sense.

What repairs do we handle?

  • Posts rotted at the ground line, replaced or braced with steel post anchors.
  • Panels pushed over by wind or a falling branch.
  • Loose, split or missing boards and rails.
  • Gates that drag, sag or no longer latch.
  • Rusted chain link fittings and bent top rails.

Repair or replace?

Repair usually wins when the problem is a handful of posts or one section, and the boards are still sound. Replacement usually wins when most posts are soft at the base, the boards are brittle or covered in moss, or the fence leans along its whole length. We probe the posts and show you what we find.

Why do San Francisco fences fail where they do?

The base of the post is the weak spot. Fog keeps the soil and the bottom of the fence wet, ivy and planting beds hold moisture against the boards, and irrigation often sprays the same strip daily. Wind adds leverage on top of a weakened post. Good repairs fix the cause: raised bottom boards, cleared vegetation and crowned concrete.

Is a shared fence my job or my neighbor's?

California presumes that neighbors share the reasonable cost of maintaining or replacing a boundary fence, unless they agreed otherwise in writing, and asks for 30 days' written notice first. Our guide on who pays for a shared back fence explains the steps.
