What changes from the flats to the hills?
Closer to El Camino Real and the Caltrain line, lots are flatter and fences are mostly straightforward privacy runs and side gates. West of Interstate 280 and up toward Skyline Boulevard, neighborhoods sit on slopes, and back yards often drop several feet across the property line. Those fences are stepped, sometimes paired with retaining walls, and need posts set deep enough to resist both the slope and the wind.
Does San Bruno get the same fog as San Francisco?
The higher western neighborhoods get a good share of fog and wind. The lower, eastern parts of town are often sunnier and calmer. That means wood holds up well on the east side, while the hills benefit from the same moisture-aware details we use in the city: raised bottom boards, crowned concrete and corrosion-resistant hardware.
What do San Bruno homeowners ask for?
- Full replacement of older wood fences along back and side lines.
- Stepped privacy fences on sloped yards.
- Wider gates to get trash bins, bikes or a small trailer into the side yard.
- Pool and spa barriers on the larger hillside lots that have them.
Whose rules apply in San Bruno?
The City of San Bruno sets its own fence height and front-yard limits and its own permit rules. They are not the same as San Francisco's, so we check them for your lot before finalizing the plan.
