How much does a fence cost in San Francisco?
Updated October 2026
As of October 2026, published cost guides put most wood, vinyl and chain link fences at about $8 to $60 per linear foot installed. Angi's San Francisco data shows a typical vinyl fence project at roughly $2,232 to $5,133. Metal costs more. On city lots, slope, stair-only access, hauling and old-fence removal decide where your job lands, so a measured, written quote is the real number.
What does each material cost per foot?
| Material | Range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Chain link | About $8 to $40 | Angi, national |
| Wood | About $10 to $45 | Angi, national |
| Vinyl, standard 4 to 6 ft | About $15 to $40 | Angi, San Francisco |
| Vinyl, privacy styles | About $25 to $60 | Angi, San Francisco |
| Aluminum | About $17 to $90 | Angi, national |
| Wrought iron | About $25 to $55 | Angi, national |
Only the vinyl figures are specific to San Francisco. We did not find a reliable, dated San Francisco figure for every other material, so treat the national ranges as a starting point rather than a local average.
What does the price depend on?
It depends on five things more than anything else:
- Length and height. Most of the price is per foot, and taller fences use more material and longer posts.
- Slope. Stepped sections on a hillside lot take more posts, more cuts and more time than a flat run.
- Access. If every post, bag of concrete and board has to go through the house or up a flight of stairs, labor goes up.
- Removal and hauling. Tearing out an old fence and disposing of it adds cost. Inch Calculator lists fence removal as an add-on of about $350 to $600.
- Gates. Each gate adds posts, a frame and hardware.
What should I budget for a gate?
Inch Calculator's guide puts a basic gate at about $400 to $2,000 installed, and driveway or security gates at about $2,000 to $12,000. See gates.
Will I split the cost with a neighbor?
Possibly. California presumes adjoining owners share the reasonable cost of a boundary fence unless they agree otherwise in writing. Read who pays for a shared back fence.
Which material gives the best value here?
Wood if…
you want a full privacy fence at a moderate price and will reseal it every few years.
Vinyl if…
you live in the fog belt and want to stop thinking about rot and stain.
Chain link if…
you need to close a side passage or lot for the least money.
Aluminum if…
you want an open front-yard fence that meets the openness rule and will not rust.
How do I get a firm price?
Know roughly how many feet you need, the height, how many gates, and whether materials can reach the yard without going through the house. Then get an itemized, written quote. Related: permits and front yard height.
